Patience - A white-backed Vulture waiting at a kill for the lions to finish. When I saw this scene in South Luangwa National Park, Zambia back in 2005, I didn’t appreciate at the time just what critical danger vultures were in, their numbers (and not just this species) are dropping precipitously throughout Africa. They face many different threats, but one of the biggest problems is poisoning - both accidental and deliberate.

In 2005, when I took the original photo, they were still classified as “Least Concern”. Since then, the species has rapidly moved up the list, and is now classed as Critically Endangered on the IUCN’s Red List of Species.
